Google Chromium on Dell Mini

Developers at Dell have managed to run a version of Google Chrome on a Netbook one year before the official release of the OS is planned. The ChromiumOS is a customised version of the open source software that Google has introduced recently. Users need 8GB of USB flash drive to run the version on their Dell Mini 10v. ChromiumOS for the Dell Mini can be downloaded for free from the internet.

The platform has not been tested excessivley so initial problems can be expected. ChromiumOS is a test version for Dell Mini users and the developers are looking forward to feedback to improve the system. The boot-up time for the OS is a quick 12 seconds, so much faster than for many other operating systems. For more information have a look at the Direct2Dell blog.

When it comes to value proposition, multi tasking, mobility and the zeal to conserve energy along with a preference for style and elegance, you will definitely find me leading the bandwagon! Ah! An outright exaggeration of facts! Well, whatever I said can be attached to the new Gateway EC series Netbooks! However, one thing that I can assure you is that I hate heavy Netbooks and the new Gateway EC series probably knows that.

Gateway EC Series
Definitely light weight (500 grams or 1 lbs whatever you prefer), the new stylish and elegant EC series Netbooks from the house of Gateway has a thickness just below 1 inch and embeds a smooth design that I appreciate a lot. The best part of the nettop is that, it is loaded with advanced power management features. I will take you through the features of the nettop but with a caution that you may inevitably fall in love with this masterpiece.

Features

Graphics and screen:

The new Gateway EC series is loaded with advanced power management features and extends the battery life up to 40%. The Netbook has a graphic activation switch, which can be used for deactivating the discreet graphics card, which is supported by the chipset used.

There is a power save button, which allows saving power by switching between the ATI graphics chipset and the integrated chipset, which is slower than its counterpart. Yet another power saving feature that is bundled with the Gateway EC series Netbook is the 13 inch LED screen that provides 16:9 aspect ratio. The size of the screen ensures that it is not a hindrance to ultra mobility and at the same time makes it comfortable for use with an external monitor. Sharp and vivid images are a feature of the led backlit display!

HDD:

Gateway’s EC series comes with a 500GB Solid State Drive, which is different than the conventional HDDs. It does not have any mechanical parts and it is lighter and smaller than the conventional hard drives. This is power saving feature that consumes less powers and is a step towards energy conservation, which helps in improving the life of the battery by 10%. The presence of an exclusive cooling system optimizes the thermal efficiency of the Netbook.

Power saver mode and CPU:

The Gateway EC series Netbook is compliant with Energy Star 5.0 and is capable of providing power efficiency in Sleep Mode. This is actually used for saving energy when the machine is in Standby Mode or is performing a number of tasks. The claim of eco-friendliness is fortified by the use of ultra low voltage Intel CPU. Therefore, there is a lot to save your expenditure on energy consumption. All these features together ensure that the battery life is increased by 40% and that the battery gives a runtime of 8hours! That is incredibly high.

Design and feel
The Gateway EC series Netbook has an elegant and attractive slim look, which makes a bold statement with dark silver and black color cover and has a palm rest of brushed aluminum, which highlights the frame and the black matte keyboard. With soft surfaces and smooth curves, the Gateway EC series Netbook is an example of sheer elegance and beauty.

Touchpad and Sound
The touchpad of Gateway’s EC series Netbook has a brilliant multi touch functionality that helps in intuitive and easy access to a number of applications. As far as the sound is concerned, the Netbook also offers state-of-the-art listening experience with its Dolby® Sound Room.

More Features
The EC series comes with an HDMI out port, which is capable of transferring high-definition data to another display. Well, I really enjoyed watching a movie on my LCD television by transferring the data! The Netbook is known for supporting DDR3 RAM and is equipped with an internal webcam. It also has an option for 3G and Bluetooth functions. It also has capacitive hotkeys, which are place on top of the keyboard.

Conclusion
The Gateway EC series Netbook is a perfect blend of beauty and functionality making it an outstanding performer in terms of portability and multitasking capability.

Review of Asus Eee PC 1000HE13:32 11/05/2009, Eee-PC, eee pc hardware, Asus Eee PC netbook news

Review of Asus Eee PC 1000HE13:32 11/05/2009, Eee-PC, eee pc hardware, Asus Eee PC Netbook news
The Swedish site IGD has reviewed the Asus Eee Pc 1000HE.

This is how the review sounds:

Test: Asus new mini PC is as smart as it is thick and heavy. Hybrid Disk, multi-touch cell phone, the best keyboard and smartest screen feature makes it a winner despite chubby external.

Eee PC 1000HE is a further development of already established 1000H, and it is the same chubby design, solid battery and smart screen solution in the predecessor. No handheld computer for you with normal-sized pockets, in short.

Display drivers for more Eee models, including this, is a bit special. The screen is 1024×600 pixels, but do you have more workspace, you will want to simply enter any size, and the desktop continues off the screen. For the mouse off the edge and surface scroll quickly and smoothly with.

Like most
Mini Computers are very similar in the platform and performance, and there is nothing special Eee 1000HE in this case. Sexcelliga batteries is the latest trend in this market, and here we get up to nine hours of operating time, or over five, when we push the computer hard, for example by playing the film. .

The details that make it
But what above all else makes Eee 1000HE stands out is not the size or performance, but small, smart details that make the experience of using the computer a little more comfortable, a little nicer and a little more fun.

For example, the keyboard, which is a wonderful beautiful lågprofilig keypad of the MacBook-style. It is a pleasure to write, never feels too small, and is neat. Actually this is the buttons almost as large as on your regular keyboard, so you do not feel claustrophobic if you want to write much text.

Then we have musplattan, which is unusually large and have very good feedback. Several PC manufacturers have begun in the spring follow Apple’s footsteps and implemented multi-touch function in musplattan. So also here, and although it is mil from the elegance and agility in a MacBook or iPhone, so there is the function there. You can scroll, browse files, zoom and rotate documents, and more. Not so very useful and bökigt with Netbookens little musyta. But it is certainly a step in the right direction. There are also special “gestures” scheduled to open Windows Explorer and other programs.

There is much that is new, smart and fun with the Asus Eee PC 1000HE. Good keyboard, smart screen, fast system drive and a decent attempt at multi-touch augurs well for the future. All this at a price which is more than reasonable for what it performs.
If the computer were not so damned clumsy, so we had loved it even more.

A mini computer that is more “PC” than “mini” but the positive outweighs. Very good price!

Fujitsu Lifebook M101014:22 20/04/2009, Netbook Laptop Reviews, Netbook reviews, Netbook Laptop Reviews
Well, yet another in line! The Fujitsu Lifebook M1010 is the ultra portable Netbook from the house of Fujitsu. The only thing in (my opinion) this Netbook that helps it to give a boost is the extended warranty. The ergonomics are not really interesting enough to give the boost it has really achieved. However, Fujitsu has complete confidence on the robustness of Netbook.

Into the details

Fujitsu Lifebook M1010
To be honest, the standalone goodie is the two year warranty of Fujitsu Lifebook M1010 Netbook. This is no doubt a welcome feature of a Netbook as it is generally a case to be found in a notebook. Apart from this, the quirky feature that I found to be catchy was the clip-on lid that acts as a testament of the emphasis that the Netbook makes put on personalization! Well, the company made a move towards adding an option of change to the color and you are free to do that as frequently as you change your socks!!

It also features a transparent lid but can be changed to the color of choice. Fujitsu did a smart thing in allowing us to make a choice of colors!

How will you do that? This is what I found: though the basic color is white, the transparent lid allows you to slot in other colors of your choice. However, take my advice, transparent one is not that bad as you can save a bit of money if you are planning to buy a Fujitsu Lifebook M1010.

Design and looks
I have always seen since my childhood that there is an affair been black and white and the same has once again been reflected in Fujitsu Lifebook M1010. The main chassis is edged in white while the screen bezel, speakers and the side stripes are given a black tone! However, the style is found to resemble that of Toshiba N10. This has undoubtedly given the Netbook a crisp and clean look.

An element of wonder
The fact that a lot of open space has been wasted on area just above the keyboard and the speakers has actually put me back from saying a few good things. This is something that I will not call smart engineering. The reason is simple. It could have been used more economically to give a great user experience. For instance, Fujitsu could have gone that extra mile to accommodate a larger keyboard. I could feel the keys on either side while I was busy typing. If you have large fingers, you will be really annoyed! Other than having a cramped keyboard, the keys are also quite noisy. However, they are not very flimsy but nowhere are they close to the HP Mini.

Trackpad is also small. The click buttons are placed on either side of the trackpad and thereby giving it a close look to the Aspire One style. Yet again there is wastage of space which has annoyed me. The buttons are somewhat polygonal in shape and have therefore eaten up unnecessary space.

Watch and click
The screen has a modest resolution of 1024×600 pixels with some good color and sharpness. There is very little flex on the screen. The webcam is a modest 1.3 MP and there is an inbuilt mic. These elements can together be very handy for teleconferencing. With a quite sturdy built and a solid base and a solid hinge, the feeling of robustness is delivered by Fujitsu Lifebook M1010.

Performance and battery
It has a four celled battery and there is ample room for replacing it with a larger capacity. It is powered by an N270 Atom processor and 1GB of RAM. The machine remains clean even under intensive testing conditions. Under maximum resource usage, the battery lasted for a respectable 2hrs and 27mins. However, it increased to 3hrs and 8mins under light usage conditions.

Additional Praise
Additional it comes with ThinkFree Office mobile which allows synchronizing documents online and then working with them offline. This deserves some respect as hardly enough guys can provide this. It comes bundled with Windows XP as OS and there is a WiFi available. There are two USB connectors and it uses 1.6GHz N270 Atom processor. The screen size is just 8.9” which is exactly what is expected out of a Netbook!

Conclusion
In an overall conclusion, I only like to say that Fujitsu Lifebook M1010 could have been better in terms of specifications and optimal space usage. The current configuration seems too less for the associated price tag!

Asus EEE PC, Asus Eee Box or Eee Top for Affordable Computing

Today if you are living in any modern society then you are well aware of the fact that computing is an essential tool. You must have a computer in your home and this computer must be connected to high-speed Internet so as to get access to the information and the world outside your home. Newspapers are falling out of favor and many bills are much easier to pay online. As such if you want to stay on top of the world and keep yourself competitive then having a computer is not an optional choice. Unfortunately the demographic that has least access to computing is the demographic that can least afford to fall further behind. Computing has been relatively expensive until recently and it was hard to put together the money to buy a computer and ongoing Internet connectivity. This would lead to falling further behind as without Internet it is very hard to stay on the cutting edge. Today though a very affordable and very capable computer is available in the form of an Asus Eee Top, Asus EEE PC and Asus Eee Box. This computer provides everything needed to get up and running online in a portable and affordable format. An Asus EEE PC and Asus Eee Box and Eee Top can provide opportunities to those who couldn’t previously afford a networked computer.

EEE PC VS. Acer Aspire One14:43 29/03/2009, eeepc, buying Asus eee pc, eee pc hardware, eee pc vs. acer one,

Computing is absolutely essential these days. It is an absolute competitive necessity both in this country and in many developing countries to have a computer in order to be able to excel in school, research new information, and stay on the cutting edge. Not having a computer can shut all sorts of doors as many business and bill based activities have now primarily migrated online, most research and news is now disseminated online, and many jobs are exclusively available online. In addition many employers are specifically looking for computer skills and so if you do not have your own computer odds are you will be disadvantaged in computer proficiency. Given this it is very important for everyone and particularly children in this country to have access to computers. For this to be the case we definitely need options beyond the expensive laptops and desktops out there as these are cost prohibitive for some of the most disadvantage people. As such the EEE PC provides an incredibly pivotal role by making computing accessible and available to those with lower income. This is a very important step in giving them the tools needed to begin getting ahead. This device can surf the web and do all the basics of computing needed to get ahead.

But about which one to buy.. Asus is the marked leader but the Netbooks from Acer – including the Acer Aspire One – are equally good in most points. Most Eee PCs and Acer One’s use the same hardware, so the main concern is the battery and form factor., Choose the one that looks better for you – or have the most cells and Amps in the battery, so it will last longer. Concerning battery the Asus EeePc’s er typcially better than the Acer One Aspire.. E.g. the Asus Eee PC 1000HE has very good battery where the Acer Aspire One 120 and Acer Aspire One 150 only last halv as long.. So go with the Asus Eee PC to be on the safe side

Apple Mac Mini14:39 26/03/2009, Netbook Laptop Reviews, Netbook reviews, Netbook Laptop Reviews
Apple’s products are always a little different from its competitors. Therefore it is not surprising that the Mac Mini from Apple is not a usual Netbook. It doesn’t fit exactly into the minibook category but still offers many features that a sub-notebook buyer would look for and also more.

What the Mac Mini can offer

Apple Mac Mini
Three important benefits of the Mac Mini are that it is compact, lightweight and therefore highly portable. It easily fits into every carrying case at 6.5″ x 6.5″ by 2″ and because of its under 3 lbs weight you won’t even notice it is there. All those specifications make it comparable to the majority of minibooks. It weighs the same as many competitive products and is small, but more cube-like and not of the style of many other Netbooks that are flatter.

However, it exceeds the competitor’s products in other ways. It features a 2.0GHz (or 2.26GHz) Intel Core 2 Duo CPU that is not comparable to the Intel Atom running at 1.6GHz that many other Netbooks have. The Atom for sure is a nice processor but it simply doesn’t have the features of a Core 2 Duo – there is more to it than just a difference in clock speed frequency.

Exceeding the Netbook competition
The Mini also offers is a 1066MHz front side bus speed. What is that about you will ask – it is the circuitry that moves data from memory to CPU and the other way around. This leads to a doubling of FSB speed compared to most other Netbooks on the market. This is also true for the hard drive which depending on the configuration is either 120GB or 320GB.

Thanks to the 1GB (or 2GB) DDR3 memory what you can expect is stellar performance (other Netbooks feature 512MB to 1GB DDR2). This gets even better if you max out the Mini with 4GB of RAM. This is double to what any other minibooks allow to date. If you add the 3MB on-chip L2 cache (this intermediate storage on the processor is usually 512KB for minibooks) you will really have a high-end hybrid.

Other features of the Mac Mini
Another benefit is that Apple’s outstanding operating system enhances performance even more. It is based on Unix, secure and smoothand shows the same focus on style and ease of use that we expect from an Apple product. You will definitely differentiate yourself from the Windows crowd with the Mac Mini.

No matter where you go – you can use that power everywhere! This is ensured by the Airport Extreme Wi-Fi that is built in. Also, the unit offers Bluetooth 2.1, which is not available for all Netbooks and often just as an option.

You will also find a built-in 10/100/1 Gigabit Ethernet connector that will come in handy if you want to go hard wired. Other minibooks usually only supply 10/100Mb. On any of the 5 USB ports available on the Mac Mini you can plug in an optional USB external model or other add-ons that you are interested in.

Not a real Netbook, still a great choice
To be honest, there is one trade-off when it comes to the Mac Mini: true portability. Despite the fact that the unit is small and light and provides you with all communication features it has no built-in screen. The graphics still support up to 1920 x 1200 on DVI or VGA, which again surpasses many of the competitors. You need to bring a small LCD flat panel along in your carrying case – only then will you be ready to go!

Summarizing it can be said that the Apple Mac Mini is far superior to many Netbooks in many ways. However, it is not a true Netbook and therefore won’t satisfy the needs of all people interested in a Netbook for example of those who like to take it to school or on a plane trip. You have to plug it into the wall as there is no battery like in laptops. If portability is not the main issue for you but rather power then this small computing platform will be an excellent choice.

Acer Aspire One14:49 24/03/2009, Netbook Laptop Reviews, Netbook reviews, Netbook Laptop Reviews
Just recently we have experienced minibooks or Netbooks as they are also called really come of age. One major reason for this evolution is the Acer Aspire One. Like all of these units it brings the benefit of being compact, but is also packed with most of the features that a regular laptop would bring you. Astonishingly the power and capacity of the Acer Aspire One is about equal to the power and capacity of high-end laptops from a couple of years back.

A Netbook is not a laptop

Acer Aspire One
However, what should be clear is that Netbooks are not intended to be able to do everything that their big brothers, the regular laptops, can do. Also they won’t be able to perform similar tasks with the same flexibility or speed. This trade-off seems very minor tough if you think of the portability you will gain with a minibook. You will for sure not be disappointed if you just want to perform the regular tasks of laptop users which are surfing the web, writing memos or updating spreadsheets.

Processor and RAM
Those tasks can be performed with the Acer Aspire One in a very robust way because of Intel’s 1.6Ghz Atom processor. It is not the same powerhouse of the company’s Dual-Core monsters as found in the full-scale machines, but still delivers enough speed to perform all the tasks you will usually want to do.

You will have plenty of RAM in order to run word processing software without having to get frustrated. You can easily use Open Office Writer, which is pre-installed on the Netbook, and edit 600-page documents without any problem with 512MB. There are even some configurations that have 1GB RAM pre-installed. In case you want to fire up a calculation spreadsheet from this set of productivity tools you will only notice a slightly prolonged loading time than on a standard notebook.

Storage options for Netbooks
On the Netbooks you will usually also find plenty of storage space for all the documents you want to work on. The 8GB SSD hard drive is quite tiny in comparison to regular laptops, but it will still take a long time to fill up the built in storage space with documents that are usually only a few dozen kilobytes big.

If you reach that limit thee is still a slot for a SD card with which you can solve your problem easily. There are many high capacity SD cards available at very reasonable prices so inserting an extra 16GB is an easy and convenient task. You can simply move your larger files there and are ready again in just a couple of minutes.

There is even another SD slot that you can format in a way to look like an internal hard drive space – even less problems for you. Another thing you can do if you know you will need more space is to acquire the Aspire One with 160GB standard hard drive which is only a little bit more expensive.

Choose between Linux and Windows
This system comes pre-loaded with Linux Lite. Don’t be afraid of that – it is really easy to learn and use. If you think you really can’t get used to any other system than Windows you can simply install Windows XP and use either Open Offe or Microsoft Office on your Netbook.

There are some Netbooks with which you will have problems watching YouTube videos as they are not running fast enough, but that is not an issue for the Aspire One. Connectivity is no problem because of the wireless 802.11g support. You can use Firefox just like on a normal laptop and go to every website you like to.

Buy a Netbook for the right reasons
Again, buying the Acer Aspire One, don’t expect to buy a high-end laptop model – it is not. It’s a Netbook which lacks some features of the regular laptops, but has many benefits too. If you have the right expectations you will be amazed by how a 2 lbs and 9.8” x 6.7” x 1.14” model provides you with lightweight and small platform for general computing that works in an excellent way.

Do you believe that you’ll have to give up tons of functionality to gain the portability of a Netbook? Think again. Just check out the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 and become a believer. It got plenty of power and capacity in a very tiny package.

Dell Inspiron Mini 9
At a featherweight 2 1/4 lbs you won’t get tired carrying this minibook around, no matter where you go. Not to forget that with dimensions like 9″ wide x 6.8″ deep x 1.3″ high, you can just tuck it in a pouch in your case and get on your way. Since the Dell Mini 9 has 802.11g Wi-Fi built-in you can connect to the Internet anywhere you can find a hotspot.

Enough Power
Don’t worry about not having enough power to run applications either. The Dell features Intel’s 1.6GHz Atom processor. While that sounds modest compared to today’s CPUs on high-end laptops, it’s pretty equal to the top of the line model only a few years back.

More than enough Storage Space
There’s ample storage for documents onboard, too. While extremely modest by comparison to the 320GB monsters that became standard nowadays, the 8GB solid-state storage built-in is plenty enough for most people on the go. Remember that 1 GB gives you enough capacity to store up to a thousand spreadsheets of 1 MB. If you want you can also go for the upgrade to a 16GB SSD drive. Up to 32GB SSD if you run Ubuntu Linux.

If you’re afraid that you might reach the limit you can always turn to the SD slot to help out. With some high capacity SD cards offering 16GB or more at very low prices, you won’t run out of space any time soon. Don’t forget with Dell’s Box.Net online file storage feature, you can upload your documents to relive local storage constraints and make a safety back-up.

RAM Capacity
While the Mini 9’s 1GB memory capacity is small compared to the 4GB or more that laptops offer nowadays, even that is plenty enough to run all your applications. Compare that, for example, to what you would have gotten on a desktop PC only a few years ago.

You can run the pre-installed Ubuntu Linux (a stellar operating system) and the entire Open Office application suite with no problem. The CPU is powerful enough to run Writer (like MS Word), Calc (the Excel counterpart), and all the other application that are available for free. If you prefer to stick with MS Windows, you can do that, too. Windows XP runs just fine and you can download and install Microsoft Office over the web.

Extra Slots and Goodies
There are plenty of extra slots and features on the Dell Mini 9. Three USB 2.0 ports, a VGA out port to connect a large monitor (the Mini has a nearly 10 inch screen already), and an Ethernet jack for wired Internet connectivity is standard. It also can be configured for Bluetooth and a 1.3 megapixel Webcam. A 3-in-1 media card reader is built-in as well.

Final Considerations
Don’t make the mistake to expect the speed, capacity, or configurability of the Dell Mini 9 to match the company’s high-end Inspiron full-sized notebooks. But for a Netbook that offers much more portability at a way lower price, you won’t feel you’ve sacrificed functionality, either. It’s a solid performer in a remarkable package offering Dell’s well-deserved reputation for reliability.

HP 2133 Mini-Note12:30 24/03/2009, Netbook Laptop Reviews, Netbook reviews, Netbook Laptop Reviews
The HP 2133 Mini-Note is one of HP’s older Netbook offerings compared to the 1010NR or the 1035NR which are newer models. However, older doesn’t automatically equal worse. The 2133 Mini-Note definitely provides an exception to this rule.

A slight drawback

HP 2133 Mini Note
There is however one major drawback, which is the 2133’s slower Via C7-M CPU. Its clock speed is still 1.6GHz, which means that you will not notice much of a difference. However, to tell the truth, the Intel Atom is definitely a better processor in practice.

Anyway, with 2GB RAM included, you will hardly be able to notice or tell the difference. Because of the larger 120GB hard drive and the faster spin of 7,200 rpm the performance of the 2133 is actually better in many applications than that of its younger brothers.

Benefits of the 2133
There are even more advantages and other options to this older model. The HP 2133 Mini-Note is 10.4″ wide by 6.5″ deep and only 1.1″ high. It has a great look and also a solid feel because of its solid, brushed aluminium lid and its magnesium-alloy chassis. There is no need to worry when taking this Netbook on the road as it offers you everything you need including USB 2.0 ports, an SD card slot, a mini-FireWire port, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

I am sure you will be pleased with the 2311’s 1280 x 768 resolution and its bright, scratch-resistant 9-inch screen. This is truly outstanding for a Netbook monitor. It really reduces eyestrain especially when you use it on longer trips unlike other minibooks.

Using an optional ExpressCard for mobile broadband means that you can take it with you more often. Dragging a standard 8lb laptop around an airport terminal for example can get very tiring. Your arme won’t get tired with this model of under 3lbs.

More advantages of the HP 2133
The HP 2133 will also run Windows Vista Basic without any hitch – not all Netbook models do that. Of course it has to be clear that you cannot expect the same great performance you will get of a high-end laptop or even a gaming desktop, but running the same OS like on other machines is still possible with the extra memory and hard drive capacity. This definitely reduces the mental wear and tear normally needed for adapting from one system to the next in different situations.

Another area where the Mini-Notebook outdoes competition is the keyboard. Like its younger brothers the 1010NR and the 1035NR the 2133 offers a standard layout which in size is full 92% of a standard laptop keyboard. You won’t have to adapt your typing style when you switch from a desktop or standard laptop to your Netbook. This makes life easier, plus it has a great feel! Furthermore, the trackpad is fully functional, unobtrusive and also easy to use. Some trackpads jump and jerk everytime you are getting near on them, but with the 2133 this problem is eliminated.

I would say that for the HP Mini-Note 2133 “older is better” holds true. So check out the HP 2133 Mini Note!
